Okay, this is a step outside the norm for me. I usually pass the Wrestling section in the store whenever I see it, but once in awhile, a figure catches my eye. I’m a fan of The Rock, so if I see a good Rock figure, I may pick him up. But usually that’s about it.
But the other day, this action figure got my attention because 1) it was on sale and 2) it was David Otunga. Otunga started his fifteen minutes of fame as one of the suitors on “I Love New York” where he was known as “Punk”. Because (I’ll say it) he looked like a punk (bitch). But since then, Otunga has gained notoriety as the baby-daddy and fiancee of Jennifer Hudson. He seems to keep renewing his fifteen minutes because now he’s a pretty popular WWE superstar. I personally don’t watch wrestling, but I guess he’s doing okay for himself.
Check out the quick review after the break…
Packaging seems pretty standard for these figures. Standard card with Otunga’s picture on the front and a preview of the entire series on the back. To note, this card seems more animated than Mattel’s DC Classics line. I don’t even like wrestling and I still look at these when I’m in the store.
Packaging Score: 7 out of 10
None to speak of. I notice the more expensive WWE figures may come with another shirt or a microphone accessory. This is the figure only.
Accessories Score: 0 out of 10
For a cheaper figure, the likeness to Otunga is pretty good. One thing I don’t like is the smarmy smirk on the figure’s face. I guess that is all the showmanship of wrestling, but it still makes me think he’s a punk.
The outfit seems pretty accurate I guess. I wonder why his pants are pink. Oh, right, he’s a punk. Makes sense.
Body seems standard, although the paint job makes it look a little inhuman. Maybe add some shadow to it to make it seem more lifelike. The painting seems very “paint by the numbers” with no specific detailing.
Sculpt/Likeness Score: 7 out of 10
Mattel does articulation pretty well on their 6″ figures and this one is pretty good with 22+ points of articulation. One thing to note, this figure has pretty good balance. I’ve put it in an array of different poses and he seems to hold it and stand pretty well.
Articulation Score: 8 out of 10
I’m definitely not a wrestling fan, but running this website I feel the need to be pretty diverse in the selection of figures I review. I won’t get to everything, but still wrestling is pretty popular and needs some representation.
This figure is okay. I think I attacked Otunga’s character more than his action figure. That dude needs to get it together and marry Jennifer Hudson. Their child is now over 2 years old. Sign the pre-nup already and make that move. If you don’t, I will (Note: I am happily married with a child of my own and have no intention of trying to wed Jennifer Hudson.)
Final Score: 6 out of 10
